A blessing is a short wish for someone’s good. This page gives you 230 blessings to share by text, card, prayer or in person. They are sorted by moment, so you can find the right words in seconds.
People still reach for words like these. The Pew Research Center’s 2023 to 24 Religious Landscape Study found that 44% of U.S. adults pray at least once a day. A blessing is a simple way to turn that habit toward another person.

How to Give a Blessing
You do not need special training to bless someone. A few habits make your words land.
- Pick the moment. A birthday, a hard day or a goodbye all work.
- Use their name. A blessing sounds warmer when it is clearly for one person.
- Be specific. Name the thing you hope for, such as rest, a safe trip or a good interview.
- Keep it short. One or two sentences are easier to remember than a speech.
- Say it your way. Speak it, write it in a card or send it as a text.
- Mean it. Plain words said with care beat polished words said in a hurry.
Blessing, Prayer and Wish: What Is the Difference?
People use these words as if they mean the same thing. They do not, though they overlap.
| Word | Who it speaks to | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Blessing | The person receiving it | May you find peace today. |
| Prayer | God or a higher power | Lord, give her peace today. |
| Wish | No one in particular | I hope you find peace today. |
Many families blend all three at the dinner table. That is fine. Use whichever word feels honest to you.
Where the Word Blessing Comes From
The word has a long history. The Online Etymology Dictionary traces bless to the Old English bletsian, which meant to make holy. Its roots point to an old Germanic word tied to blood and to marking an altar. Bible translators later chose the word for Latin benedicere and Greek eulogein, which mean to speak well of someone.
The best known blessing in the Bible is the Aaronic blessing. The King James Version of Numbers 6:24 to 26 reads: “The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.”
It is also very old. In 1979, archaeologists found two small silver scrolls in a burial cave near Jerusalem. According to the Ketef Hinnom scrolls entry, they date to the late seventh or early sixth century BCE and carry a version of this blessing. The Israel Museum keeps them today.
Whatever its age, the form stays the same. A blessing names a good thing and wishes it on someone else.
